Purpose and Application: A simple solenoidal superconducting magnet generates a high enough magnetic field to emulate the signature of a vessel, usually a ship, causing a magnetically activated mine to detonate a safe distance from the source. Being considered by the Navy in at-sea minesweeping applications.
Example: The Advanced Lightweight Influence Sweep System (ALISS)contains a 5 ft diameter superconducting magnet built by General Atomics, and is shown below mounted on a high speed Navy Test craft. The system has successfully demonstated effective and reliable magnetic mine countermeasures.Go back to main page.
