ENERGY STORAGE AND MANAGEMENT
Purpose and Application: A superconducting magnet, usually either a solenoid or toroid configuration, serves as a device to store electrical energy so it may be used in certain applications:
Emergency Power
Transient Stabilization
Power Quality
Being considered by the Air Force for base power stabilization to guard against power interruptions.
Example: The first superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES)system used by industry was built by General Atomics in 1983, and was designed to even out electrical load transients on part of the grid distribution managed by the Bonneville Power and Lighting Co.
